English Language Arts - 6th & 7th Grade
Room # 203

August 13, 2007

 Dear Parents,

I am pleased to inform you that I will be using a system of teaching English called the Shurley Method, and I feel it will be a strong addition to our Language Arts curriculum.

This method has been used successfully with students at all ability levels and has been proven to be effective in schools where traditional programs have failed.  Not only do students finally learn grammar and writing techniques, but they actually enjoy the process.

The Shurley Method teaches the solid foundations of grammar in a new and exciting way. Students use rhythm and a set of specific questions to classify sentences orally, identifying each sentence part as well as the overall sentence structure. They learn how the sentence parts fit together to make sense and express an idea.  They learn how to expand, improve, and edit their writing. The students then learn how to express their own ideas through formal and creative writing.  Due to extensive classroom work, the individual homework load is significantly reduced.

You are invited to visit our classroom to see the Shurley Method in action.  I believe that you will be delighted as you see your children actively participating and learning.  You can also go here --> Parent Help  or go to the Homepage of the website SMS Homepage and navigate your way through Academics to Ms. Jackson’s Web page.

Shurley Method
3-Day Rotation Schedule

Day 1 – Teach
(No test will be given to students on Day 1)

  1.   Vocabulary & Definition Time

  2.   Introduce new grammar concept and classify sentences orally

  3.   Leave classified sentences on board for Oral Skill Builder

  4.  Write a Practice Sentence and an Improved Sentence with whole class.

Day 2 – Review, Teach and Test
(Tests will be given to students. One test every 3 days)

  1. Vocabulary and Definition Time
  2. Classify same sentences orally again.
  3. Teach the other English concepts that will be tested.
  4. Remove practice sentence from board and give students worksheet as a test.

Students are tested on the same sentences that they have classified orally together.  This helps students gain the confidence to work with many skills independently and helps weak readers concentrate on learning English skills without struggling with reading vocabulary.

Day 3 – Teach and Check

(Hand the tests back)

  1. Vocabulary and Definition Time
  2. Classify same sentences orally again
  3. Leave classified sentences on board as a visual aid while checking student tests
  4. Discuss mistakes and how to correct them.
